Volusia County Soup Kitchen

After Hurricane Katrina ransacked the Gulf Coast, we learned that over 400 people from Mississippi had been moved by FEMA to the Daytona Beach area for 30 days. In addition to supporting the hurricane victims, our growth group also wanted to support the ministry that reaches out to the local homeless of the area. We spent Saturday morning preparing food for a large group of people, and we stayed on to greet & serve, bounce dining room fights, and clean.

What struck me as amazing were the hearts of the full-time workers of the soup kitchen, and their vision to expand its services to help more families in need. Many of the full-timers or regular volunteers have themselves been homeless on the streets or grew up in the projects. They have a heart for those who are living where they used to be, and they know just how to communicate to them, to be firm with them, and to love on them.

If you would like to donate items to the Volusia County Coalition for the Homeless, current needs include hygiene items (razors, soap, deodorant, toothbrushes & toothpaste, shampoo, lotion, etc.), clothing items (t-shirts, jeans, shorts, undergarments, socks, shoes), and blankets. Please contact them at (386) 795-1278.
